#1 Lady Hornets Roll to MIAA Opening Win Over Northwest MO.; Kelsey Barnwell (Cherokee) has 14 Points for Emporia State

December 3, 2014-Kelly Moten had 18 points to lead four Lady Hornets in double figures as #1 Emporia State defeated Northwest Missouri 80-44 on Wednesday night in White Auditorium. It was the MIAA opener for both teams as the Lady Hornets won their 20th straight home game.

Emporia State jumped out to a 7-4 lead only to see Northwest go on a 7-0 run to take an 11-7 lead with 16:30 left in the first half. The Bearcats led 15-12 with 14:10 left when the Lady Hornets went on an 11-0 run to take the lead for good.  An 8-2 run gave Emporia State a 39-28 lead at the half and the lead would not go below double figures the rest of the night.

Moten was joined in double figures by Kelsey Barnwell (Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma) with 14 points and Addie Lackey and Kathryn Flott with ten points each. Amber Vandiver and Whitney Gordon each had eight rebounds as the Lady Hornets outrebounded the Bearcats 55-33.  Moten and Lackey each had three assists while Merissa Quick blocked three shots.

The #1 Lady Hornets are back in action on Saturday when they play host to Newman. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. from Slaymaker Court in White Auditorium.  Emporia State will hold their Alumnae Game on Saturday afternoon starting at 12 noon.

NOTES
The win was Emporia State’s 20th straight in White Auditorium, the second longest home court winning streak in school history and third longest active streak in Division II.
