Alvina Begay qualifies for Olympic Trials

Recruiting/Signings:

  • Brooke Coggins, Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, recently inked with the University of Tennessee Volunteer’s softball team. She becomes the first Native American woman to play for the Vol’s softball team. Congratulations Brooke! (Eastern Band Cherokee Player sings with Lady Vols Softball)
  • Vernene Sheppard, Navajo, from Tuba city basketball is taking her talents to the next level by signing with Chandler-Gilbert Community College. Good luck to Vernene next season! (Sheppard accept college offers)

Top News & Highlights:

  • The top story of the week was Alvina Begay ,Navajo, who qualified for the U.S. A. Olympic Trials this summer in the 10,000 meter run. Begay ran her personal best at the Payton Jordan(Stanford) Cardinal Invitational and met the “A” standard for the Olympic Trials to be held later this summer. Congrats to Alvina and good luck this summer! (Alvina Begay Qualifies for U.S. Olympic Trials)
  • Chris Wondolowski, Kiowa tribe, was recenlty named the Major League Soccer(MLS) Player of the Month by the North American Soccer Reporters. Accounting for more than half of the team’s 15 goals,  “Wondo” is second in the league in goals with eight in eight games played thus far. Keep an eye on Chris this season as he goes for his 3rd straight scoring title in the MLS! (Chris Wondolowski named MLS Player of the Month)
  • Football in May? It’s only 4 months off but the football pundits have already began to discuss who might win this upcoming seasons Hesiman Trophy and NDN countries own Tyler Bray, Citizen Band Potawatomi, is on the pre-season watch list with 18 other athletes. Tyler is the starting quarterback for the University of Tennessee Volunteers of the SEC conference. (Potawatomi Tribal Member Tyler Bray on 2012 Heisman Watch List)
  • On that same subject, Sooner Spectator Magazine recently published a special tribute edition to Native American athletes who had an impact for the storied football program at the University of Oklahoma. We recently received a copy and it has great articles on Jack Jacobs, Wahoo McDaniel, Tommy Tallchief, Chebon Dacon and of course Heisman winner Sam Bradford.   • Warmer weather means the golfers are in full season and a lady golfer for NDN country making her name is Alexandrea “Alex” Schulte, Northern Ute tribe, who recently recorded her third Top 20 finish of the season as she competes on the Florida SunCoast professional golf tour.   • Finally, but not least, congratulations go out to Loren Anthony, Navajo, and Goldie Tom, Navajo, who recently became Powerlifting state champions for the state of New Mexico. Both lifters won in the Squats, Bench Press and the Deadlifts Divisions. (Navajo Powerlifters take First Place at NM State Powerlifting Championships)

Announcements:

  • The 2012 Jim Thorpe Native American games, to be held this summer on June 10th thru 17th in Oklahoma City, is needing your help to volunteer at many of the events. So if you have some time to spare and want to help out, sign up and volunteer! (Jim Thorpe Native American Games Now Accepting Volunteers)
  • Also, sticking with news regarding the Jim Thorpe games, the Jim Thorpe Games All-Star football game will be held on June 15th at Putnam City High School in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Come out and support some of NDN countries best football players! (Jim Thorpe High School All-Star Football Game set for June15th)
  • Sam Bradford, Cherokee, the starting quarterback for the St. Louis Rams will be having a summer football camp this summer in Norman, Oklahoma. He will be replacing Adrian Peterson this summer as Adrian goes through MCL surgery. Better signup fast as slots will be full by the end of the month if not already!   • Speaking of camps, Haskell Indian Nations University, Indian Countries only all Native American University that competes in the NAIA will be hosting camps on their campus this summer in Lawrence, Kansas.
