SALEM, Ore. – The Evergreen State College took Corban to overtime on Saturday night before falling, 70-65, in a Cascade Collegiate Conference women’s basketball game played at C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
Evergreen (5-5 overall, 3-3 CCC) came out hot, outscoring the Warriors (8-6, 4-3) in both the first and second quarters while playing lock-down defense during the first 20 minutes. By halftime, the Geoducks led, 31-22, holding Corban to just 24 percent shooting.
Corban turned the game around in the third quarter and cut its deficit to just three points heading to the fourth quarter, thanks to holding Evergreen to just a 26 percent shooting mark in the third stanza.
In the final quarter, Corban made a free throw to extend the advantage two points late, but a layup in the waning seconds of regulation by Evergreen’s Japhera McEachin tied the game. The Warriors’ basket as the buzzer sounded was waved off by the officials, sending the contest to overtime.
In the overtime period, the Warriors had the key offensive rebound and put-back bucket to give the Warriors the lead late, leading to the victory.
Cherish Moss (Makah Tribe) paced the Geoducks with 17 points and four boards, while Cayla Jones (Yakama Tribe) also had a very productive night with 17 points and six assists.
Emily Yost provided the offensive punch on the night for Corban, scoring 16 points to go with 12 rebounds. In addition, Treasure Farmer tallied 11 boards in the important victory for the Warriors.
Neither team shot the ball particularly well on the evening, Evergreen finishing at 29 percent while Corban was only slightly better at 32 percent. The Warriors did, however, enjoy a significant 71-39 rebounding advantage.
