Madison Hammond (Navajo) Scores in 48th minute as Wake Forest Blanks Charlotte, 3-0

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Wake Forest maintained its perfect record by taking down Charlotte with three second-half goals, 3-0, at Transamerica Field on Sunday night.

The Demon Deacons (4-0) also earned their third clean sheet in four games by blanking the 49ers (2-1).

“That was a solid win against a dangerous Charlotte team,” head coach Tony da Luz said. “We started slowly in the first half, but made some good changes in the second half. Substitutes Meghan Kennedy, Lauren Tangney and Ashley Frank made important contributions to break the game open and help us get a great non-conference road win.”

After a foul in the box in the 48th minute, Madison Hammond (Navajo) stepped up to the penalty spot and put away the PK for what proved to be the game-winner.

Abby McNamara scored for the second-straight game in the 61st minute. Off a corner kick, a deflection led to a loose ball in front of the net and she beat the keeper to make the score 2-0.

Playing in her first game in a return from injury, Giovanna DeMarco capped off the scoring with a 73rd minute goal. Tangney sent in a cross from the right side and DeMarco hit a one-timer past the keeper.

Kennedy and Mac Carmichael combined for the shutout in goal. Kennedy made three saves in the second half, while Carmichael wasn’t forced to make any in the opening 45.

Wake Forest returns to action on Thursday, playing host to VCU at 7 p.m.
