by (Los Angeles, California) – The National Hockey Leagues Los Angles Kings won the 2012 Stanley Cup playoffs in convincing fashion against the New Jersey Devils by a final score of (6-1). The Kings closed out the series in game six (4-2) to win their first championship in franchise history. Despite jumping out to a series lead (3-0) lead over the Devils, the team from New Jersey fought back to win two straight before finally running falling to the pivotal game six.
The Kings started the game at a very fast pace and were able to go up (3-0) in the first quarter. One of those goals was from an assist by First Nations player, Dwight King from the Metis people. The assist came at the 4:59 mark in the first quarter that put the Kings up (3-0). In the third quarter, Dwight was able to jump in on another power play assist at the 3:45 mark that put the L.A. Kings up (6-1). Dwight finished the game with the those two assists and had two shots attempts at the goal and logged just over 15 minutes of action for the game. King was drafted in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by the Los Angeles Kings. He spent five seasons with the Lethbridge Hurricanes in the Western Hockey League. King was called to the NHL by Los Angeles on November 16, 2010 to replace the injured Alexei Ponikarovsky on their active roster and has been with the L.A. Kings ever since.
Other First Nations player on the squad is Jordan Nolan, Ojibwe, who is the son of famed NHL coach Ted Nolan. Jordan was able to log just over 6 minutes in the championship game for the Kings but was unable to garner any goals or assist to the game but gained valuable play-off experience that will server him will in the future. Nolan was selected by the Los Angeles Kings in the seventh round in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. He spent the next two seasons with the Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League (AHL), where he totaled 14 goals and 39 points in 115 games. In February 11, 2012, Nolan was recalled to join the Los Angeles Kings, where he played his first NHL game that same day in a loss to the New York Islanders.
