SEGUIN, Texas — The LeTourneau men’s basketball team fell just short in their road bout against Texas Luthern, losing 74-72 in overtime Sunday afternoon in Seguin.
Deonte Jackson (Navajo) put up over 20 points for the fifth straight game, with 26 today. Christian Adams recorded a solid 18 points and led the team in rebounds with 10 on the day to mark a double-double for the Senior.
LeTourneau (3-2) wasted little time jumping out to a 15-4 lead over the hosting Texas Luthern (4-3) by the 11-minute mark. The YellowJackets extended their first-half lead to 17 after a Jackson 3-point jump shot making it 28-11 with just under eight minutes left. Jackson later committed his second team foul causing him to come out of the game, the Bulldogs were then able to go on a 16-3 run to bring the score to 36-33 before heading into halftime.
The back-and-forth match continued into the second half as the Jackets struck first by the likes of a three-point play by Jackson, extending the lead to make it 45-38 early in the period.
Texas Luthern fought back to tie the game and then take the lead with six fast-break points against the Jackets in that span to make it a 51-47 game in favor of the bulldogs. From that point on the game was not tied until we met for overtime with four lead changes in that span.
The YellowJackets trailed 63-62 with just under six minutes remaining. The next six minutes consisted of some great looks on both sides of the court. A Jackson 3-point bucket pulled the Jackets within two points at 70-68 with just a minute to play.
LeTourneau went on to grab a rebound and go down the court and score a driving layup to knot the game at 70 a piece. With just 24 seconds remaining in the game the Jackets were able to force the ball out of bounds which eventually led to a Jackson steal to end regulation and head to overtime.
A total of six points were scored in the five-minute extra period, four of the points coming from the foul line. Ultimately it was a Riley Fornerette layup that gave the Bulldogs the edge over the YellowJackets with a score of 74-72 in favor of the hosts.
