Shantashia John (Mississippi Choctaw) Led Belhaven University with 27 points but Blazers Fall to Piedmont

DEMOREST, Ga. – The Belhaven Women’s Basketball team was beaten on Friday night in their road contest against conference foe Piedmont by an 87-63 score line.

The early going was filled with back and forth runs by both squads with neither team grabbing a firm foothold. Belhaven though was able to sneak the edge against the hosts in the first quarter leading after 10 minutes of action 23-22. 

The second quarter proved to be a a decisive one as the hosts were able to stifle the Blazers’ offense holding BU to just six points and taking a double digit lead into the half. Coming out of the half time break the Blazers did well to trim the deficit outscoring Piedmont 26-21 and trailed just 63-58 going into the final frame.

Once again the hosts were able to stifle the Belhaven offense for a quarter holding the Blazers to single-digit scoring and holding on for the conference win. 

Shantashia John led the way for the Blazers, and all scorers, putting up 27 points along with three assists and two steals. Xhiir Burgess had another impressive game as she grabbed 19 points while pulling down a team high eight rebounds.
