Coffeyville, Kan. – In celebrating their scheduled Native American Heritage game, the #17 Coffeyville Community College Red Raven Women’s Basketball Team opened up their 2023 Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) play with a 72-65 victory over the Pratt Beavers. With the victory, the Red Raven’s overall record improved to 6-1 including a 1-0 record in KJCCC play.
This game was predicted to be a hotly contested matchup as the 5-0 Beavers were coming to Nellis Hall to play the 5-1 Red Ravens. The matchup did not disappoint.
The first half was tight with both teams tied at 14-14 at the end of the first quarter. Coffeyville picked up the intensity in the second quarter outscoring Pratt by five to take a 30-25 halftime lead. Both teams came out firing in the third quarter with Pratt outscoring Coffeyville by a point in the quarter (23-22), however, Coffeyville would not let the Beavers gain any advantages in the fourth quarter as Coffeyville outscored Pratt 20-17 in the final quarter to earn the overall 72-65 victory.
Coffeyville held a distinct advantage from the charity stripe in the game as the Red Ravens were 16/24 from the charity stripe while Pratt was 7/8. Coffeyville made nine more free throws while attempting 16 more than Pratt in the seven-point victory. Coffeyville also held a sizeable lead on the boards, outrebounding the Beavers by 14 (51-37) which led to a sizeable 16-2 advantage in second-chance points for the Red Ravens.
Coffeyville had four players in double figures led by sophomore Bailey Layman with 22 pts. Layman’s 22 points were fueled by shooting 6/10 from behind the arc. Red Raven freshman guard Karys Washington had 20 points for Coffeyville while also grabbing 12 rebounds for the 20-12 double-double. Rounding out the double figures scorers for Coffeyville include sophomore guard Kyleigh Ortiz with 13 points and sophomore forward Ivy Fox with 11 points and 7 rebounds.
