The second quarter has been very good to the Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team this season. Sunday afternoon was no different for the No. 15-ranked Blue Dragons.
Leading Colby by eight points after one quarter, the Blue Dragons broke the game open by outscoring the Trojans by 17 points in the second stanza. Hutchinson then rolled to an 86-46 KJCCC victory on Sunday afternoon at the Sports Arena.
The Blue Dragons improved to 8-0 overall and 2-0 in the Jayhawk Conference. Hutchinson travels to Independence on Wednesday. Colby dropped its third in a row and fell to 3-4 overall and 0-3 in league play.
Hutchinson outscored Colby 28-11 in the second quarter and built a 47-22 lead at halftime. The Dragons were 9 of 16 shooting (60.0 percent) in the second period, hitting three 3-point goals. The Blue Dragons used a pair of 13-0 runs in the quarter to build a 43-15 lead after an Akaysha Muggeridge 3-pointer with 2:42 to play in the second quarter.
The Blue Dragons have outscored 7 of 8 opponents in the second quarter and are a plus-74 in scoring margin in the second period this season.
Hutchinson shot a season-high 52.5 percent (31 of 59) shots and hit a season-high 12 3-point goals in 23 attempts on Sunday. The Blue Dragons had five 3-pointers in the first quarter and eight in the opening half with six different players connecting from distance.
Freshman Kiki Smith hit a season-high four 3-pointers to score a game-high 19 points for the Dragons. Smith was 6 of 9 shooting overall.
