Veronica Williams (Mississippi Choctaw) led Belhaven University with 25 points in 100-80 Win over Sewanee

JACKSON – The Belhaven Women’s Basketball team picked up an impressive 20-point win on Saturday over Sewanee with the Blazers scoring a season-high 100 points in the victory.

The win saw the Blazers take an early lead over the Tigers in the opening minutes with strong early shooting including hitting 3 of their first 4 from beyond the arc. However, despite a 24-21 lead after the first quarter, it was the visitors who took the lead into halftime after a cold offensive quarter saw the Blazers outscored 21-10 in the period.

Belhaven answered back though in the third quarter with 31 points in the frame with arguably their best offensive quarter of the season. Belhaven hit just under 67% of their shots in the 3rd and hit 4-7 threes to restore their three point lead heading to the fourth.

The Blazers would then pull away from Sewanee in the fourth quarter with a 35 point frame, marking their best scoring half of the season. In the fourth quarter, Belhaven shot 53% from the field and a stellar 75% from the free throw line on 20 attempts to seal the victory.

Veronica Williams had the best offensive game of her early Belhaven career leading the Blazers with 25 points including going 9-11 from the free throw line and hitting four threes. Ebony Gayden grabbed another double-double in the win as she scored 17 points to go with 17 rebounds.

Savannah Hailey and Katelyn Coleman each also finished in double figures with 15 points and 10 points respectively. Shakendalah Jones added eight points and six assists as the primary ballhandler for the Blazers.
