Veronica Williams (Mississippi Choctaw) Led Belhaven University with 14 points in 69-44 Win over Mississippi University-Women

JACKSON – The Belhaven Women’s Basketball team took down in-state rival MUW on Thursday 69-44 thanks to a dominant second half defensive display.

Belhaven jumped out to an early lead on the visitors with the Blazers picking up the first six points of the contest. MUW would answer though and a late three in the first quarter would give the Owls their first lead of the night.

Into the second quarter, Belhaven began to pull away extending a 19-16 lead out to 28-16 with a 9-0 run to start the period. Belhaven took a 39-27 lead into the half with a strong shooting split over 50% from the field through the first two quarters.

The Blazers were dominant in the second half, especially defensively. The Blazers limited the Owls to just two points in the third quarter and kept the Owls scoreless for over eight minutes of game time across the third and fourth quarters.

Belhaven pulled away in the final 20 minutes, outscoring MUW 30-17 to closeout the win. At the free throw line, Belhaven was stellar going 14-15 in the game, over 93% as a team.

The Blazers were led by Veronica Williams who finished with 14 points on 6-12 shooting. Ebony Gayden tallied 12 points on an efficient 5-7 shooting night while 14 total Blazers finished in the scoring column.
