LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville women’s basketball team heads northeast to Pennsylvania for its first ACC road game in school history, taking on Pittsburgh on Sunday in the Petersen Events Center at 2 p.m.
The contest will air on ESPN3, with Jeff Hathhorn (play-by-play) and Jen Tuscano (analyst) on the call. The radio broadcast will be available on WKRD 790 AM in Louisville, with Matt Andrews (play-by-play) and Adrienne Johnson (analyst) calling the action.
No. 7 Louisville and Pittsburgh, conference opponents when both schools were members of the BIG EAST, will be meeting for the 11th time in school history. The Cardinals hold an 8-2 advantage, winning the last four meetings. UofL posted a 78-45 victory on Feb. 9, 2013, the most recent contest between the programs.
Louisville (13-1) is coming off its fifth-consecutive victory following a 75-48 rout of Georgia Tech on Jan. 2. It was the Cardinals’ first ACC game in school history. Louisville shot 50.0 percent from the field, held Georgia Tech to just 29.0 percent from the floor, and forced 24 turnovers.
Freshman Mariya Moore matched a season best with 22 points to lead all scorers, connecting a season-best 9-of-12 field goals. She also had eight assists in the win. Bria Smith totaled nine points, eight boards, four assists, and three steals, and Jude Schimmel added eight points and six rebounds.
For the season, Moore is pacing the Cardinals in scoring (13.9) and assists (54). Sara Hammondand Smith are both averaging 10.9 points, and Schimmel has a team-high 38 steals.
The Panthers (10-3) recorded their fifth-consecutive win on Dec. 30 – their last game before playing Louisville – with a 93-58 decision over Delaware State. Pittsburgh shot 50.0 percent for the game and connected on 21-of-23 free throws. The Panthers registered 24 fastbreak points.
Stasha Carey and Brianna Kiesel each scored 19 points in the win, with three other players reaching double figures in points. Yacine Diop had 13 points and nine rebounds to go with five assists.
Kiesel is pacing the team with a 17.8 scoring average, while also leading the squad in assists (59) and steals (30). Carey, averaging 10.4 points, has a team-high 9.2 rebounding average. Monica Wignot is fourth in the ACC with 2.6 blocks per game. As a team, Pittsburgh ranks third in the league with 7.2 3-pointers per game.
The Panthers are under the direction of second-year coach Suzie McConnell-Serio, who has a 21-23 record at the helm of the program. Pittsburgh finished last year at 11-20 and was picked to finish 15th in this year’s ACC Preseason Media Poll.
