MILWAUKEE – Led by a scorching second half shooting performance from guard Sterling Gibbs, Seton Hall topped Marquette 80-70 on Wednesday evening at the BMO Harris Bradley Center in Milwaukee.
Gibbs poured in 19 of his game-high 24 points after halftime as the Pirates (14-6, 4-4 BIG EAST) shot 63.0 percent (17-of-27) from the floor after the break.
Matt Carlino once again led the Golden Eagles (10-10, 2-6 BIG EAST) with 16 points, while Juan Anderson, Derrick Wilson and Sandy Cohen III (Oneida Tribe of Wisconsin) each reached double figures.
Marquette trailed by as many as 24 points in the second half after the Pirates used a 22-3 run, which spanned the half, to break things open. MU had a few opportunities to cut its deficit to single digits as the game wound down, but SHU held on for the win.
The Golden Eagles trailed just 32-28 at the break and were led by nine points from Carlino, while Taylor added eight. Both teams shot an identical 38.7 percent (12-of-31) from the field in the first stanza, though SHU hit six 3-pointers to MU’s four.
The Pirates scored 17 of the first 19 points of the second half to build a 49-30 lead as Steve Wojciechowskicalled a pair of timeouts prior to the under-16 media timeout.
Marquette returns to the BMO Harris Bradley Center in a 1 p.m. tip on Saturday, Jan. 31 against Butler.
