Jude Schimmel and the No. 8 Louisville Women’s Basketball Faces Pittsburgh Again on Sunday

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville women’s basketball team, looking to rebound from just its second league loss of the year and remain near the top of the ACC standings, returns to action on Sunday against Pittsburgh at 2 p.m. in the KFC Yum! Center.

The Feb. 8 contest will be broadcast on WKRD 790 AM in Louisville, with Matt Andrews (play-by-play) and Adrienne Johnson (analyst) on the call. Fans can watch the game through CardsTV, either on GoCards.com or the GoCards.com GameDay Live mobile application.

Louisville faced Pittsburgh earlier this season in Pennsylvania on Jan. 4, when the Cardinals earned a 63-57 win. The Panthers led by as much as 10 in the first half, but the Cardinals their opponent 42-28 in the second half behind 51.9 percent shooting.

The No. 8 Cardinals (19-3, 7-2 ACC) dropped just their second league game of the year, falling at No. 15 Duke 66-58 on Feb. 2. Louisville tried to climb back from a 17-point deficit in the second half, but hit just 39 percent of its shots in the period. The Cardinals’ defense forced 22 turnovers for the game and limited All-American Elizabeth Williams to just 11 points on 3-of-8 shooting.

Senior Sara Hammond had a game-tying high 17 points to go with eight rebounds, and freshman Mariya Moore added 14 points, connecting on four 3-pointers. Senior Jude Schimmel finished the game with 11 points.

Moore is leading the Cardinals in points per game (13.7), 3-pointers made (36), and assists (85). Fellow freshman Myisha Hines-Allen is second on the team in scoring (12.7) and leads the squad with a 57.0 percent shooting clip that ranks 15th nationally. Hammond is the team’s top rebounder, averaging 6.5 boards per game.

The Panthers (15-7, 5-4) have won three of their last four games, scoring a 60-50 win at NC State on Thursday. Pittsburgh shot just 36.4 percent from the field, but went 14-for-14 from the charity stripe and outrebounded the Wolfpack 41-34.

Brianna Kiesel scored a game-high 28 points, going 12-of-12 from the free throw line, and Yacine Diop added 11 points and 16 rebounds in the win.

For the season, Kiesel is pacing Pitt in scoring with the fourth-best average in the league (18.5). She also has team bests in assists (111) and steals (51). Monica Wignot is averaging 12.0 points, and Stasha Carey leads the team with 7.8 boards. Fred Potvin has hit 43 3-pointers for Pitt, which ranks third in the ACC in 3s per game.

The Panthers are under the direction of second-year coach Suzie McConnell-Serio, who has a 26-27 record at the helm of the program.
