Haskell Indian Nations University Women Top Doane College 62-49 to move to 2-0 on the season

(Crete, Neb.) – The Haskell Indian Nations women’s basketball team improved to 2-0 last night by defeating the Doane College Tigers 62-49 on the road in Nebraska. The Indians were led by senior guard Arentia Begay (Navajo) who had 14 points and 5 assists.

Playing under the new clock rules for the women’s college game this year which is setup with four 10 minute quarters, the Indians would lead 14-10 after the first quarter as both teams struggled shooting form the field.

In the second quarter, the Haskell women maintained their margin of lead and got some big points off the bench from transfer Cerissa Honena-Reyes, who finished with a career high 11 points in the game for Haskell. Haskell would go into the half with a 27-21 lead.

In the second half, the Tigers would be only able to close the gap to 4 points with 7:49 to play in the 3rd quarter. Junior Kortney Meat would help lead the Indians in the 3rd and 4th quarters as she tallied a game high 7 assists and also scored in double figures with 11 points. The Indians maintained a double-digit lead after the third and would finish off the tigers by 13 points.

Next up for Haskell will be a return trip to Nebraska where they will take on No. 15th ranked College of Saint Mary in Omaha. Tip-Off is set for 6:00 PM CST.
