WINFIELD, Kan. – The Haskell Indian Nations University women’s basketball team moved to (5-0) on the season after defeating Southwestern College 84-55 in the first game of the Tara Patterson Classic in Winfield, Kansas. The Haskell women’s basketball were coming off a pair of wins over ranked teams in the NAIA Div. II Preseason Top-25 poll and the momentum carried over into this game as well.
The Basics…
The two teams combined for 50 turnovers in Friday’s match-up. Southwestern (1-3) committed 30 of those, which resulted in 33 points for the Indians in the 29-point decision. Haskell (5-0) drained 11 triples in the contest, while the Lady Builders shot less than 25 percent from beyond the three-point arc, as Southwestern dropped its second-straight game.
How it Happened…
– Haskell inched out to a four-point lead, 14-10, heading into the final minute of the first period, but Southwestern scored the final four points of the quarter, and the two teams faced a 14-14 dead-lock after 10 minutes of play.
-Haskell scored the first five points of the second quarter, only to watch Southwestern’s Me’Shelle Parker’s triple ignite an 11-2 run over the next six minutes that gave Southwestern a 25-22 lead after they made a free throw with 2:59 remaining in the opening half. But the Indians answered with a statement of their own. Haskell ended the half on a 17-2 run over the final three minutes of the period, and built a 39-27 halftime advantage.
-The Indians didn’t let up in the second half. Haskell achieved its first 20-point lead (52-31) at the 4:36 mark of the third quarter, and had pushed its lead to 25 (64-39) with a triple at the buzzer to end the third period.
-Haskell wasn’t done yet. The Indians opened the fourth quarter on an 8-0 run. Looking for a breath of fresh air, Southwestern Interim Head CoachWhitney Corley sent the bottom of her bench into the contest facing a 73-39 deficit with seven minutes to play.

–Tyler Sumpter led Haskell with 20 points as one of three Indians to finish with 12 or more points in the contest. Haskell shot 48 percent (24-50) from the floor and 47.8 percent (11-23) from long range as a team. Cerissa Honena-Reyes added a career-high 17 points and junior guard Kortney Meat continued her double-digit scoring streak with 12 points of her own.
