MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men’s basketball team survived a late scare to hold off IUPUI, 75-71, in overtime on Monday evening at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.
Freshman Henry Ellenson gave the Golden Eagles (1-1) a 72-71 lead on a free throw with 1:02 remaining in the extra session and a Duane Wilson 3-point play sealed the victory with 13 seconds to play. Ellenson led Marquette for the second-straight game with 18 points, while Luke Fischer added his second double-double of the young season with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Wilson posted 16 points and Sandy Cohen, III (Oneida Tribe of Wisconsin) added 11 points and four steals in 40 minutes of action.
Darell Combs led the Jaguars (1-1) with 21 points and seven rebounds.
Marquette led by as many as 10 points in the first half, but went into the break tied at 36 after suffering 13 turnovers. The Jaguars capitalized to the tune of 15 points off those MU miscues and turned the ball over just six times themselves. MU outshot IUPUI 56.5 percent to 38.7 percent over the first 20 minutes.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Thursday, Nov. 19 at the BMO Harris Bradley Center against Iowa in the Gavitt Tipoff Games at 8 p.m. Central time. The contest will air live on FS1.
Postgame Notes:
• Today’s game marked the third meeting between Marquette and IUPUI. After the win, the Golden Eagles now own a 3-0 record over the Jaguars.
• MU shot 13-of-23 (.565) from the field in the first half while holding IUPUI to 12-of-31 (.387).
• Sandy Cohen, III reached double-digit points on a deep three-pointer with 3:11 remaining in regulation after IUPUI took a one point lead. It is the second time in his career he has achieved the double-digit point mark in consecutive outings, last doing so last season against Morgan State (12/28/14) and Providence (1/3/15) – both MU victories.
• The overtime session was Marquette’s first since 1/31/15 in a tilt against BIG EAST-foe Butler. The OT victory was MU’s first since an 80-72 win over Georgetown (1/20/14).
