Ohsweken Demons Win the First Ever Creator’s Cup

by Matthew Caruk in Canadian Lacrosse

The Canadian Lacrosse League became the first professional league to boast a team made up of all Native players. Better yet, they had two all Native teams in their inaugural season. That is precisely why it was so fitting that the league’s first season finished with both of those teams playing on the reserve in Ohsweken, for the aptly named CLax trophy, the Creator’s Cup.

The Iroquois Ironmen and the Ohsweken Demons faced each other twice during the season, and split the season series. However, those two games were as different as any on the schedule. In the first matchup, the two teams went to overtime where the Ironmen came away with the victory. However, in game two the Demons embarrassed the Ironmen 12-4. Jeff Powless, who was named CLax goaltender of the year earlier this week, not only set the CLax record for fewest goals in a game, but it’s also the lowest total goals against in any professional league this year.

Prior to the game the Attwood brothers, Mike and Chris, were announced as the winners of the final individual awards for the season. Chris, offensive star for the Ohsweken Demons, was named the league’s Most Outstanding Player, while Mike, the Iroquois Ironmen goaltender, was named as the league’s Most Valuable Player. Said their father before the game, “it’s unfortunate someone has to lose, but we as parents come out as winners today.” There have been a number of great lacrosse brothers over the years but no doubt, the offensive minded Chris shooting on goaltender brother Mike has to be one of the most intense driveway shootouts. If only the cameras were rolling then.
