Tyler Sumputer (Paiute) has 18 Points and 10 Rebounds in Haskell Women’s Basketball near upset of NCAA Division II Rockhurst University

(Kansas City, MO) – Haskell Indian Nations University Head Coach Shane Flanagan always has a game plan when taking his women’s basketball team into a competition.  Even with an exhibition, nothing changes how he prepares for the contest and that was the mindset as Haskell was in Kansas City for a Saturday afternoon game with NCAA Division II Rockhurst University.  The Indians almost pulled off the upset but Arnetia Begay‘s inside shot rattled off the rim as time expired.  After blowing a 16-point lead in the second half, the Hawks hung on and escaped with a 62 – 60 victory over HINU.

Haskell committed 28 turnovers which proved costly down the stretch and Rockhurst seemed to have control midway through the third quarter.  However, the Indians didn’t panic and they slowly chipped away at the 16-point lead.  Once again, Tyler Sumpter picked up right where she left off Friday as she played a big part in the comeback.  Sumpter had a double-double as she led the team with 18 points and 10 rebounds.  Arnetia Begay was the only other Indian in double figures as she finished with 12 points.

The women’s team now gets a much needed break as they pack up for the holidays.  The rest will be good but it won’t be long as they’ll return to Lawrence after Christmas and prepare for a home game on December 30 against Doane College.  Haskell closes out the fall semester with a 12 – 2 mark.
