(Springfield, Missouri) – The 25th ranked Haskell Indian Nations University women’s basketball team opened their 2016-2017 season with a 58-56 road win over the Evangel Crusaders. The Indians were led by junior Tyler Sumpter (Nixon, NV) who had a 14 points, 2 steals, and 7 rebounds.
The Crusaders took a 25-22 lead into intermission and outscored the Indians 21-16 in the third quarter. However, Haskell chipped away at the Evangel lead eventually taking the lead with 4:22 left in the game at 48-47.
The final minute would be nip and tuck as Evangel pulled within one with 13 seconds left after a lay up cutting the Haskell lead to 56-55. After fouling, the Indians went 1-of-2 from the line giving Evangel another opportunity in the final seconds for which they were unable to capitlize on. Haskell outscored the Crusaders 20 to 10 in the final quarter to secure their first win of the season.
Ember Sloan (Cedar Ridge, AZ) 13 points, 2 rebounds and 5 steals with 18 minutes in the game. Kourtney Meat had 7 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals with 32 minutes.
