Nearly halfway through their schedule, the San Diego Christian College Hawks hold an 11-1 record as former Flagstaff Eagles Shay Toehe (Navajo) has had an impressive freshman season.
Scoring 10.4 points per games so far, Toehe’s prolific 3-point shooting carried over from her high school career. Hitting 41.5 percent from behind the arc, Toehe’s 34 3-pointers easily leads the Hawks, with the next closest player sitting at less than half of the freshman’s total. Her total 3s ranks her tied for second in the Golden State Athletic Conference, and her percentage sits sixth.
The totals are not just among the best in her conference, but Toehe’s shooting also ranks her 24th in the NAIA Division I in 3-point percentage and 16th in 3s made despite playing just 17.4 minutes per game.
Toehe connected on 7 of 14 3-point attempts while scoring a career-high 25 points against Saint Katherine on Nov. 30.
The Hawks have received votes in the NAIA D-I top 25 poll, as their only loss came to No. 6 and undefeated Vanguard University on Dec. 6. Currently idle for the holiday weekend, San Diego Christian will play again on Dec. 29 against Point Loma Nazarene University. Toehe and the Hawks will be in Phoenix against Arizona Christian on Jan. 7.
