Ava Battese (Comanche/PBPN) added 12 points as Cameron Aggie’s women cruise past Western New Mexico, 90-58

LAWTON – The Cameron women’s basketball team blew past Western New Mexico 90-58 on Saturday afternoon in their second highest scoring game of the season.

All Aggies on the floor scored with 44 points coming from the bench. Five Aggies reached double digits as Andrea Martinez led with 16 points, Amaka Nwakamma 14 points, Jamie Bonnarens13 points, Ava Battese (Comanche/PBPN) 12 points and Parfitt McNair 10 points.

McNair was one rebound shy of a double-double, and Lejha Smith added eight rebounds.

Leading WNMU was Melody McLaughlin with 14 points and Jade Botelho 11 points.

After six lead changes in the first period, Cameron fired on all cylinders in the second quarter, leading by as much as 17 points and outscored WNMU 24-10 for the advantage at the half.

Cameron used a 19-2 run to extend their lead to 38-21 at the four minute marker. The Mustangs tried to inch back with eight unanswered points until Martinez drained a trey and Bonnarens capped off a great first half with a jumper for a 43-29 lead at the break.

Part of CU’s success derived from cashing in 17 points off ten Mustang turnovers. The Aggies shot 48 percent from the field, made four treys and went 7 for 9 from the line in the first half. WNMU shot 35 percent, made five three-pointers and made all four free throws.

The Aggies retained momentum in the second half, opening it with nine unanswered points and used a 10-1 run to break open their lead to 27 points. CU fouled WNMU nine times in the third period, but the Mustangs failed to capitalize making just 4 of 9 at the line.

CU held steady in the last quarter, even using a Martinez trey to take their largest lead of 41 points. The Aggies ended the game shooting 47 percent on the floor, 33 percent from out deep and 62 percent at the line.

WNMU shot 33 percent from the field, 31 percent from beyond the arc and 68 percent at the stripe.

Cameron moves to 6-10 overall and 4-4 in the Lone Star Conference. WNMU is 0-16 and 0-8 in the league.
