Ava Battese (Comanche/PBPN) Leads the Cameron Aggies with 16 Points who fall to Texas Women’s University

LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron women’s basketball team had four players with double-digit scoring nights, but could not overcoming a perfect free throw shooting night from Texas Woman’s as they fell 71-67 on Thursday night.

Ava Battese (Comanche/PBPN) led the way with 16 points, going 4-12 from three-point range. Parfitt McNair added 13 points and Whitney Outon finished with a career-high 12. Additionally, Maighan Hedge scored 10 points to go along with five assists.

As a team, the Black and Gold shot 38.6 percent from the field, while going 8-25 from long range. They also were just 15-22 from the foul line, while TWU was a perfect 13-13 in the contest. One plus for CU was that they turned the ball over just four times and forced the Pioneers into 15 turnovers, nine of which were off steals.

The Aggies were in a barn-burner after the first quarter that ended with Hedge nailing a buzzer-beating heave from the other side of the Aggie Gym mid-court logo. Those were three of her five first quarter points, to go along with a trio of dimes to jumpstart the Aggie offense. The CU attack finished with 19 points in the first frame.

Cameron shot 50 percent from the field in the first quarter but still trailed by six due to a hot offensive start by the Pioneers, seeing them shoot at a 60 percent clip from the floor. TWU ended the half on a 12-8 run to boast a 39-32 lead at the break.

In the third quarter, the Aggies pulled within a point of Texas Woman’s thanks to a 10 point outburst by the freshman Outon. The Pioneers nailed 50 percent of their shots in the final frame and came away with a 71-67 win handing the Aggies their eighth straight loss.

TWU was paced by freshman Macy Wilkerson, who had a game-high 23 points, while Ma’K’La Woods added 18. As a team, they shot 51 percent from the field and went 6-20 from three-point range.

Cameron is now 7-19 overall this season and 4-14 in league play, while Texas Woman’s improves to 10-15 overall and 7-10 against the Lone Star Conference. The loss drops Cameron out of playoff contention as Texas A&M-Kingsville now has seven wins and Western New Mexico, who TAMUK plays Saturday, holds the tiebreaker over the Aggies.
