LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron Aggies continue their winning streak with a 95-85 win over Texas A&M International. The Aggies were red hot from three-point land shooting 53 percent from deep.
The Cameron Aggies returned home on Thursday night to take on the Texas A&M-International Dustdevils, as the Black and Gold looked to continue their winning streak after going unbeaten a week ago against UAFS and Oklahoma Christian.
In the first half, Ava Battese (Comanche/PBPN) got out to a record-setting pace, already having five threes by the media timeout in the second quarter. Gunning to break the record she already held, most three-pointers by an Aggie made in a contest, Battese would need just six more the rest of the way. By the break, the senior guard from Elgin, Okla. tacked on another triple inching her closer to extending the record. Battese ended the contest with nine made 3’s, a long ball away from tying her record. She poured in a career-high 31 points, with three rebounds and three assists. On the defensive end, the senior guard scrapped her way to a pair of steals.
The sophomore sensation, Maighan Hedge, was almost perfect in the first half as well. Her only blemish being getting in foul trouble which sidelined her for most of the second period. Prior to that she already put up 11 points and dished out four assists, continuing her conference play tear that has seen the Australian, native average almost 30 points since the turn of the calendar. Hedge wrapped this game up with 27 points, five made three’s, and nine assists.
In the first half, the Aggies got a huge lift from freshman Stephanie Peterson who poured in seven points and handed out four assists in the first 20 minutes. The Colorado native was one of four Aggies to post double figures as she finished the game with 11 points, six assists, and five rebounds.
By midway through the third frame, the Black and Gold already had 15 made triples as a team, just five shy of the Lone Star Conference mark for a single game. Hedge and Whitney Outon helped out Battese beyond the arc drilling four shots from long range respectively at that point.
At the end of the third, the Aggies were stroking the three-point shot at an over 50 percent clip, getting anything they wanted from downtown against the Dustdevil defense.
Outon has provided a huge jolt to the Aggie starting five during this winning streak, and tonight was no different. Outon poured 11 points while snagging six rebounds and swatting away a pair of shots. Head coach Emma Andrews spoke highly of the Aggies break out center “She’s finding her confidence at the right time for us.”
CU controlled the contest the whole way, at one point leading by 15, they never found themselves trailing in this contest. The Black and Gold finished the game shooting the trey ball at a 52 percent clip.
“I knew all along late January was when we would start rolling, I think now people are starting to see what we have seen all along,” Andrews added. The Black and Gold have really seen a huge improvement in the last two weeks of the month going on a three-game winning streak and pushing their conference record above .500.
