Bacone’s Matt Qualls (Cherokee Nation) Named Red River Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week

WACO, Texas – Matt Qualls (Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma) of Bacone College (Okla.) was honored as the Red River Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for his performance over the dates of Feb. 2-8. This is the 12th award of the 2014-15 basketball season.

Qualls set career highs in points on consecutive nights, while pushing the Warriors to their first conference victory of the season on Saturday. The senior forward exploded for 35 points and 11 rebounds on Friday as Bacone suffered another defeat, 104-94, against University of the Southwest (N.M.). On the next night, Qualls took it a step further with 37 points and 15 boards to seize a long-awaited 77-71 win over the University of St. Thomas (Texas). It also marked the 12th double-double of the season for the Tahlequah, Okla., native. He connected on 27-of-51 shots from the field and 18-of-22 from the free throw line for the week. Qualls leads the RRAC in rebounding with 10.7 per game, and he is second in scoring with 25.7 points per game. The Warriors stand at 1-13 in conference play with a record of 6-17 on the season.

DaJuan Cooper of Wiley College (Texas), De’quentin Greer of Our Lady of the Lake University (Texas), Joseph James of LSU Shreveport (La.), Curtis Jones of Langston University (Okla.), and Jason Williams of Texas College were additional nominees this week.
