OAKLAND, Calif. – Whitney Fieldsted’s fifth double-double in the last six games led BYU-Hawaii women’s basketball to a 73-59 triumph over Holy Names University on Saturday afternoon Tobin Gymnasium.
Fieldsted recorded a team-high 16 points and 12 rebounds to go with four assists in the victory. Celeste Claw (Navajo Nation) ended with 11 points and Brydgette Tatupu-Leopoldo added 12 rebounds and six assists.
The fourth consecutive win for the Seasiders (9-5, 6-2 PacWest) is the fourth longest win streak in BYU-Hawaii women’s basketball history trailing the longest streak by three games. BYU-Hawaii almost doubled Holy Names (2-14, 1-7 PacWest) in rebounds 62-32. The Seasiders had eight fast break points and 22 points off the bench.
Within the first minute of play, the Seasiders scored four unanswered points giving them a lead that they would hold for the rest of the game. A seven-point run highlighted by Claw’s 3-pointer made it 11-3 with 15:47 in the half.
BYU-Hawaii went on a 13-0 run, bringing the score to 24-5 with 10:05 on the clock to build its largest lead of the first half at 19-points. The teams traded points for the next few minutes until the Hawks cut into the Seasiders’ lead with a 9-0 run of their own to make it a 29-18 game with 6:25 left in the first half.
In the last four minutes of the half, the Seasiders answered with a 13-point run featuring six consecutive points by Fieldsted to head to the locker room ahead 44-23.
A free throw by Marquessa Gilson gave BYU-Hawaii their largest lead of the game to make it 45-23 with 18:46 on the clock. A 3-point jump shot from Claw at 14:18 stopped a small Hawks’ run to hold the Seasiders’ lead at 50-32, but the teams continued the seesaw scoring for most of the second half.
A jump shot by Emily Nelson sparked a 6-1 run to build a 65-47 lead with 4:31 left. The game became aggressive with each team trading fouls and free throws to end the game.
