MANKATO, MN – Cassie Askvig, Macy Williams, and Coral Gillette (MHA Nation/Standing Rock Sioux) all recorded double figures in the University of Mary women’s basketball team’s loss to Minnesota State. The trio combined for 40 of the Marauders 59 points in UMary’s 70-59 loss. The Marauders held an early lead, controlling the first quarter but the Mavericks held the advantage in the final three quarters of play and ultimately claimed the win. Askvig led the way with 18 points with Williams and Gillette each pitching in 11.
With the loss the Marauders fall to 11-6 on the season and 5-3 in NSIC play. MSU improves to 9-3 overall and 6-2 in the Northern Sun.
FIRST HALF BREAKDOWN
The Marauders dominated on the defensive end of the floor in the first quarter, holding the Mavericks to just eight points while posting 15 of their own to take a seven point lead into the second quarter. MSU caught fire in the second quarter, outscoring the Marauders 24-12 to take a five point lead into half. Askvig scored 12 of the Marauders 27 first half points.
SECOND HALF BREAKDOWN
The Mavericks outscored the Marauders 19-16 in each of the last two quarters to extend their lead by six in the second half. UMary began their comeback attempt late in the fourth quarter, clawing their way back to within eight points but that was as close as they would come with MSU claiming an 11 point victory.
