ASHLAND – Sophomore wing Syd Fryer broke up 18th-ranked Southern Oregon’s usual balance for a night in an 84-65 victory against Evergreen (Wash.), exploding for 26 points and 10 rebounds Saturday at Lithia Motors Pavilion.
In SOU’s third consecutive Cascade Conference triumph, Fryer shot 11-of-16 to register her second career double-double and bury her previous career-high of 12 points. Junior point guard Daranda Hinkey (Shoshone/Paiute) knocked down four 3-pointers on her way to 20 points and six assists for the Raiders (7-3, 3-1 CCC), who hadn’t produced a 20-point scorer this season coming into the contest.
They led from start to finish, going up 21-6 nine minutes into the game and cruising the rest of the way to drop the Geoducks to 0-8 and 0-4.
Destinee Jones chipped in 13 points and four offensive rebounds. She, Kenadee Honaker and Delaney Sparling collected four steals apiece as the Raiders totaled 20 and forced 29 turnovers – their most since the first game of the season.
After the Raiders went into halftime up 43-26, Fryer went 5-of-6 to score 11 points in the third. With one minute left in the period, a Sophia Altemus triple gave them their biggest lead at 66-39.
SOU committed just eight turnovers a night after giving up six. The result was 32 more field-goal attempts than the Geoducks (24-of-54), who shot a higher percentage than the Raiders but also gave up 11 more offensive rebounds.
SOU has won the teams’ last 12 meetings.
Evergreen’s Anna Cook had 19 points, seven rebounds and four assists and Alexcis Higginbotham had 16 points and six boards.
The Raiders are off until Dec. 29 and 30, when they’ll travel to Portland to play Warner Pacific and Multnomah.
Anna Cook is Swinomish and Merrily Jones is Cayuse for Evergreen. Thanks
