MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 9 University of Oklahoma wrestling team secured its second win of the weekend, defeating No. 24 West Virginia on Sunday afternoon inside WVU Coliseum. With the win, OU moves to 8-2 on the season and 3-1 in the Big 12.
Seven Sooners recorded wins in the contest, including bonus-point victories at 133 pounds and 149 pounds.
“I’m happy, particularly with the way our lighter weight guys are wrestling,” OU head coach Mark Cody said. “They’ve gotten us off to great starts in both of these duals and really saved us against Bucknell because we were short handed. They’re wrestling aggressive and they’re winning the close matches, which is important. They’re not giving up takedowns very easily, and we saw very few of them getting taken down today. I’m very, very happy to come out of this weekend with two wins.”
Sophomore Ryan Millhof, ranked No. 14, started out the contest at 125 pounds with a 2-1 decision over No. 12-ranked and 2015 national runner-up Zeke Moisey. Millhof secured a 2-point nearfall in the second period for his only points of the bout.
No. 3 Cody Brewer tallied four takedowns, a reversal, two penalty points and secured the riding time point en route to a 13-3 major decision over Cory Stainbrook in the 133-pound match.
At 141 pounds, sophomore Trae Blackwell registered a takedown in each period and tacked on the riding time point for a 7-4 decision over Tony DeAngelo.
Freshman Davion Jeffries (Muscogee Creek Nation) recorded an 11-1 major decision over Zachary Moore at 149 pounds. Jeffries took a 5-0 lead into the final frame before adding an escape and two takedowns to extend his lead for the major.
In the 165-pound bout, No. 9 Clark Glass secured a takedown, an escape and 2:59 in riding time for a 4-0 decision over Connor Flynn.
With a first-period takedown, an escape in the third and the riding time point, No. 20 Matt Reed recorded a 4-0 decision over Ross Renzi at 174 pounds.
At heavyweight, No. 14 Ross Larson recorded OU’s final points of the match with a 7-1 decision over A.J. Vizcarrondo. Larson, who tallied two takedowns in the bout, registered all of his points in the first two frames.
Redshirt freshman Brock Wingbermuehle dropped a 12-3 major decision to No. 13 Dylan Cottrell at 157 pounds, and at 184 pounds, Bubba Scheffel defeated Lance Dixon by 4-0 decision. Brad Johnson dropped a 13-4 major decision to No. 7 Jacob A. Smith in the 197-pound bout.
The Sooners return home on Friday, Jan. 22, for a Big 12 matchup with No. 14-ranked Iowa State. The dual, which is part of the Beauty and the Beast event with OU women’s gymnastics, is slated for a 7 p.m. start in the Lloyd Noble Center.
