Derick Denny (Oneida Tribe) Led Lakeland with 13 points on Thursday but Muskies Suffer First Loss

MEQUON – The Lakeland College men’s basketball team shot a season-low 37.0% and was held well below its season scoring average in an 86-61 loss to Concordia University Wisconsin Thursday night at the R. John Buuck Fieldhouse.

The Muskies came in averaging 88.9 points per game but finished 27 points below their scoring average and lost for the first time this season, dropping to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.

The Falcons (2-4 overall, 1-2 NACC) controlled the game inside, out-rebounding Lakeland 49-27 and outscoring the Muskies 44-24 in the paint. Concordia also grabbed 17 offensive rebounds and turned them into 18 points.

The Falcons also shot 47.1% (33 of 70) and made 10 three-pointers. In contrast, Lakeland shot 20-for-54 for the game and had just three offensive rebounds. The Muskies also had an uncharacteristic 16 turnovers.

Lakeland led just once in the game at 8-7 early after a layup by Derick Denny (Sr.-Oneida Tribe of Wisconsin). Concordia led 39-26 at halftime and was ahead by at least 12 points the rest of the way.

Denny led Lakeland with 13 points while Kurt Jansen (Sr.-Wrightstown, Wis.) added 11. Jacob Servais (So.-Coon Valley, Wis.) added seven and Tanner Hackl (Jr.-West De Pere, Wis.) also added five points, five rebounds and three blocked shots, part of Lakeland’s 24 bench points.

Malcolm Bowers scored 13 points to lead the Falcons, who had four players score in double figures and seven players with at least eight points. Bradley Prinsen also added 11 points, eight rebounds and five steals.

Lakeland is back home Saturday when it hosts Dominican (Ill.) University in NACC play at 4:15 p.m. at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
