Eric Green (Hualapai Tribe) Scores 6 Points as Holy Cross Concludes Historic Postseason Run in Loss to No. 1 Seed Oregon

  • The Lead: Holy Cross junior guard Robert Champion (Charlotte, N.C.) scored a game-high 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting, but the No. 16 Crusaders fell to No. 1 seed Oregon, 91-52 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday afternoon at Spokane Arena.

HISTORIC POSTSEASON:

  • Holy Cross appeared in the NCAA Tournament for the 13th time in school history and is now 8-13 in tournament games.
  • On Wednesday, March 16, Holy Cross earned its first NCAA Tournament victory since March 13, 1953 when it defeated Wake Forest in the East Region Semifinal. The Crusaders topped Southern, 59-55, in the First Four round of the 2016 NCAA Tournament.
  • Holy Cross capped off its magical run in the Patriot League Tournament with a 59-56 victory over Lehigh on March 9, for its league-best sixth conference title.
  • The Crusaders entered the Patriot League Tournament as the No. 9 seed and became the first team in conference history to win four tournament games – all on the road – as well as knocking off the top two seeds in the Tournament (No. 1 Bucknell and No. 2 Lehigh).

INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS:

  • In addition to Champion for Holy Cross, junior forward Malachi Alexander (Bowie, Md.) totaled 10 points and five rebounds, while senior guard Eric Green (Hualapai Tribe.) scored six points.
  • Oregon was led by Chris Boucher who scored a team-high 20 points to go with five rebounds. Elgin Cook notched a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds, while Dwayne Benjamin and Dillon Brooks scored 12 and 11 points, respectively.

FIRST HALF:

  • Oregon began the game on a 7-0 run, but a slam-dunk by Champion on a baseline drive ended the rally and made the score 7-2 (15:32). The Ducks went up by 10 points (14-4) less than four minutes later (11:51), but a jumper by Green on the next possession cut the deficit to single digits (14-6).
  • The teams traded baskets over the next minute, as Oregon gained an 11-point lead (19-8), but a three-pointer by Champion sliced the margin back to eight (19-11) at the 9:43-mark of the first half.
  • Oregon worked its lead to 14 points (25-11) with 8:30 on the clock, but an old-fashioned three-pointer by Champion made the score 25-14 (8:22).
  • The Ducks, however, outscored Holy Cross 18-11 over the waning minutes of the first half to head into the locker room with a 43-25 lead.

SECOND HALF:

  • Oregon opened the second half on an 11-2 run to grab a 54-27 lead at the 15:35-mark of the period. The Ducks kept up the pressure and went ahead by 37 points (66-29) with 11:25 on the clock, before Champion ended the run with a layup to make the score 66-31 (10:49).
  • Holy Cross got as close as 34 points the rest of the way, as Oregon would go on to claim the 91-52 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Oregon shot 55.7 percent from the field (34-61) and drained 6-of-20 from behind the arc (30.0%), while the Crusaders hit 36.4 percent from the floor (20-55) and connected on 6-of-23 from downtown (26.1%).
  • The Ducks drilled 77.3 percent of their free throws (17-22), while the Crusaders sank 6-of-15 from the charity stripe (40.0%).
  • Oregon led in total rebounds (44-28), assists (15-6) and points in the paint (52-22), while Holy Cross led in steals (3-1)
