- The Lead: Senior guard Justin Burrell (Dumfries, Va.) scored a game-high 15 points to lead the Holy Cross men’s basketball team to a 70-60 victory over Colgate at the Hart Center.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Burrell hit seven of eight field goal attempts on the night, while also recording eight assists and two steals.
- Sophomore forward Malachi Alexander (Bowie, Md.) finished the game with 14 points and three rebounds, while senior forward Malcolm Miller(Laytonsville, Md.) added 12 points.
- Junior guard Eric Green (Mountain House, Calif.) also played well, scoring 13 points while hitting all five of his field goal attempts.
- The Raiders were led by Ethan Jacobs with 13 points.
- The Crusaders hit 54.0 percent of the their field goal attempts on the night (27 of 50), including 46.2 percent of their three-pointers (six of 13).
- Holy Cross also held a 29-22 rebounding advantage, while collecting eight steals and four blocks.
- The Raiders were able to connect on 47.9 percent of their shots from the floor (23 of 48) and 42.1 percent of their three-pointers (eight of 19).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The game was close early on, and the Crusaders held a 7-6 lead with 16:51 left in the first half.
- Colgate then went on an 11-4 run to take the lead, before Holy Cross came back with a 9-2 spurt of its own to claim a 20-19 advantage.
- But the Raiders responded by scoring 17 of the next 19 points, to pull ahead by 14 (36-22) with 3:35 to go before the break.
- The Crusaders did manage to score the final five points of the half, and Colgate led 36-27 heading into the locker room.
- The Raiders were able to build their lead back up to 10 points (41-31) early in the second half, and were still up by eight (45-37) with 13:15 left to play.
- Holy Cross then stepped up its play on both ends of the court, using a 20-4 run over the next 8:26 to pull in front by eight (57-49).
- Alexander scored seven of his points during that spurt, while a free throw by Green with 7:38 remaining put the Crusaders in front for good.
- Colgate would get no closer than four points down the stretch, as Holy Cross hit all six of its free throws in the final minute to pull away for the win.
