Fort Lewis College redshirt freshman Kayla Herrera (Chippwa) has been named the 2017 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – February 28, 2017 – Fort Lewis College redshirt freshman Kayla Herrera (Turtle Mountain Chippewa) has been named the 2017 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year, announced today by the league office.

From Santa Fe, N.M., Kayla Herrera has started all 27 games this season and is averaging 12.9 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.0 steals per game.  Her 30.7 minutes per game are the 10th most in the league and she ranks 12th overall in scoring.  An Academic All-RMAC Honor Roll selection this season, Herrera leads all players in the RMAC in steals with 2.0 per game (53).

Herrera is the fourth women’s basketball player in school history to be named the RMAC Freshman of the Year (2002 – Amy Mohr, 2004 – Karen Thies, 2007 Laura Haugen, West Division).
