TEXARKANA, TX—The University of the Southwest Women’s Basketball program opened up 2020 with a road victory over Texas A&M-Texarkana. The Lady Mustangs defeated the Lady Eagles 77-66 to improve their record to 4-9 and 1-3 in Red River Conference play.
“We played hard. Took us a little while to get back in the groove of things. But we moved the ball well. 4 ladies in double figures. Still have some growing to do. However it was a great start out of the gate from winter break. Focused on Wiley now!” said Head Coach Devonte Brewer following Thursday’s victory.
Harlei Haceesa (Navajo) led all scorers with 24 points on 9-15 shooting from the field. The Shiprock, NM native grabbed 5 rebounds and had 4 steals in 34 minutes of play. Isabel Rodriguez’s double-double streak came to an end as she had 7 points and 15 rebounds. The 15 rebounds led the team. Mykal Thomas and Rhianna Bortoli had 14 points each and Martinique Larvingo added 12 points of her own.
The Lady Mustangs came back from the winter break aggressive offensively as they had 44 points at the half. Head Coach Devonte Brewer was pleased with the way the ladies showed up after break. “Physically we looked pretty good. We started the game pretty good. We’re still a little behind in our conditioning. But over all we looked healthy!”
