Tulsa, OK – Haskell started off its exhibition game against a division one team with a three pointer from Stand Lovato giving the Native American fans in attendance something to cheer about. But with a total of 28 turnovers Haskell let Tulsa run away with the game 118-55.
Haskell sophomore forward Dallas Rudd said even though they knew they were playing a tough team they came into the game ready to upset the Golden Hurricanes.
“We went in the game with the notion of winning and we didn’t back down at all. It was a great experience for us, being able to play an NCAA division one team.”
Top scorers for Haskell was Stand Lovato and TsaLiDi Sequoyah with 11 points each.
Haskell Coach Chad Kills Crow also talked about his team’s unwillingness to give up but said the referees also played a role in the game.
“They (referees) protected them (Tulsa) well, the foul count was lopsided. I know we committed some fouls but it really got out of hand. We played tough, I am very impressed, we are right where we are suppose to be.”
When asked how the game was set up between the tribal college and Tulsa, head coach Danny Manning said it was his time spent in Lawrence and associations with Haskell people that helped organize the match up.
“I lived in Lawrence Kansas since 1984, and my high school coach was a past coach at Haskell and he use to talk a lot about them. I know Chad (Kills Crow) and some of the players at Haskell, it’s a good game to have, we have a lot of people that have a lot of interest in Haskell and we are just glad we were able to figure out a way to get it done. “
Manning stated that another match up between the schools could happen in the future as well.
For the Haskell fans and alumni like Carla Feathers, it didn’t matter that their team lost,
“I’m so proud of them. It’s so neat to see all these Indian men taking on TU. Despite the score, I’m so proud of them. They look real good!”
