Entering Friday night, the Haskell Women’s Basketball team was 3-2 in MCAC league play, looking to add another W to the win column against the Warriors of Waldorf College. Overall, Haskell’s record stood pretty tall before Friday with a 14-5 overall record, while Waldorf has seen their fair share of struggles. Waldorf arrived at Coffin Sports Complex on Friday night with a 2-17 overall record and a 1-4 record in the MCAC.
In the first half, Haskell got off to the slow start with early foul trouble, allowing Waldorf to lead most of the first half. Haskell struggled shooting in the 1st half, at just 38% from the field. With just over two minutes left in the 1st, Kourtney Meat came off the bench and hit a three-pointer to give Haskell the lead over Waldorf. Meat had 10 points in the first half. The Indians never looked back and did not trail again. At the break, Haskell led Waldorf 31-29.
At the start of the 2nd half, Haskell carried the momentum over from the 1st, with 10-2 run in the opening 3:30 of the 2nd. Haskell never trailed in the 2nd half, outscoring Waldorf 46-25 in the 2nd. The Lady Indians field goal percentage in 2nd, was a big improvement of 52% compared to 38% in the 1st. Haskell went on to defeat Waldorf 78-54.
Off the bench Kourtney Meat led all scorers with 18 points. Two of Haskell’s starters were also in double-figures, Jenine Coriz with 14 points and Tinaya Murphy with 10 points. Haskell also dominated the turnover battle, forcing 22 turnovers and turned-over the ball 11 times, only four times in the 2nd half.
Head Coach Shane Flanagan was very pleased with the victory. Flanagan cited a big portion of the win to leading scorer Kourtney Meat, “When Kourtney Meat plays well, we play well. She hasn’t played that good lately and this was a big game for her.” Coach Flanagan went on to say, “It is an important win for us and continue our goal to win out at home.”
Haskell moves ahead to 15-5 overall and 5-2 in league play. On the other side, the struggle is real for Waldorf this season. The Waldorf Warriors find themselves sitting at 2-18 on the year and 1-5 in the MCAC standings. Waldorf will finish the weekend in the Sooner State, against Oklahoma Wesleyan.
On Saturday, the Haskell Ladies host a matinee matchup against Bellevue University at 3pm in Lawrence at the Coffin Sports Complex.
