by LAS VEGAS, N.M. — The New Mexico Highlands women’s basketball team scored 30 points in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough as the Cowgirls fell to Fort Lewis 77-64 in a non-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup Monday afternoon at Wilson Complex.
The Cowgirls (2-3) fell behind 20-5 after the first quarter, but outscored the Skyhawks (3-2) 59-57 over the final three quarters – including 30-19 in the fourth quarter. NMHU struggled to get going from the field in the first quarter, shooting 15.4 percent (2-for-13) from the field – but shot just under 50 percent the rest of the contest.
Jordyn Lewis (Navajo) had her third-consecutive 20-point game as she led NMHU with 20 points, including going 3-for-7 from 3-point range, to go along with three rebounds. Brianna Stewart finished with 11 points, three assists and two steals, Allyah George had 10 points, four rebounds, two steals and a block and DeAvion Allen had 10 points, four rebounds and two assists.
As a team, the Cowgirls shot 40.7 percent from the field, including 5-for-14 from 3-point range. The Cowgirls were also an impressive 15-for-16 from the free-throw line. Fort Lewis shot 43.3 percent from the field, including going 10-for-32 on 3-pointers, while hitting 9 of 14 free throws.
The Skyhawks had four players finish in double figures in Alyssa Yocky (11), Alyssa Adams (11), Jordan Carter (11) and Tanisha Begay (10).
The Cowgirls return to action Friday as they travel to play in the Pak-A-Sak Thanksgiving Classic hosted by West Texas A&M in Canyon, Texas. NMHU takes on West Texas A&M 1:30 p.m. Friday and Eastern New Mexico 11 a.m. Saturday.
