Jordyn Lewis (Navajo) led the New Mexico Highlands with 18 points in Close Contest with Chadron State

CHADRON, Neb. — The New Mexico Highlands women’s basketball team led going into the fourth quarter, but fell short on the road at Chadron State 68-63 on Sunday at Chicoine Events Center.

The Cowgirls (3-8, 0-5) held a 49-47 lead going into the fourth quarter and Jordyn Lewis (Navajo) increased the lead to five points after draining a 3-pointer.

The score was tied 58-58 with 5:08 remaining and the score remained that way until Chadron State (5-7, 4-2) drained a 3-pointer at the 2:41 mark to take the lead for what turned out to be for good. Another Lewis 3-pointer with 1:48 left cut the Eagles’ lead to 63-61, but that’s as close as NMHU would get.

The Cowgirls are off until Dec. 31 when they return home to take on Westminster at 3 p.m.

A key difference for NMHU was it got to the line just five times (3-for-5) compared to 22 times for the Eagles (18-for-22).

Lewis led the Cowgirls with 18 points to go along with four rebounds and three assists. Maiah Rivas had 16 points, six steals, four rebounds and two assists while Shania Johnson had 13 points.
