Jordyn Lewis (Navajo) Scores 22 points as New Mexico Highlands Fall in Home Opener

Las Vegas, NM — The New Mexico Highlands Women’s Basketball team fell to Texas A&M International 98-71 in Wilson Complex on Tuesday night.

The Dustdevils, who started four girls that were over 5-11, dominated inside and lit it up from 3 as they connected on fourteen 3’s during the game.

The Cowgirls started out by hitting four of their five first shots and jumped out to an early 7-2 lead. The offense continued for the Cowgirls as they gained a 16-5 edge over the Dustdevils as Desiree Forster found Harlie Roach on a bounce pass through the middle of the paint with 3:23 left in the first quarter. The Dustdevils would rally back after knocking down two 3’s, and the Cowgirls managed a 16-15 lead through one quarter of play.

 The second quarter was all Dustdevils as they knocked down six three-point shots and scored 14 points on the paint to take a 49-32 lead over the Cowgirls.

The Cowgirls finished shooting 24-52 (46%) from the field, grabbing 32 total rebounds, scoring 22 points off turnovers and 32 points in the paint, which included 22 points, 6 assists and three rebounds from Jordyn Lewis (Navajo) and Ashley Antone (Navajo) with a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Harlie Roach added 9 points and 6 rebounds while Desiree Forster added 14 points and 4 rebounds.

The Cowgirls will be back in action next week as they host Northern New Mexico on Monday November 18th at 5 pm at Wilson Complex. Free admission will be granted for those who bring a canned food or non-perishable item (minimum 1 item per person)
