FORT WAYNE, IN – The Chicago State women’s basketball team traveled to Fort Wayne, Indiana Thursday and dropped an 86-52 decision to Purdue University Fort Wayne in their second game in as many days.
Josie Hill (Sisseton-Wahpeton) finished with a double-double at 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Newell added on 15 points and Taylor Norris tallied nine.
First Quarter – Purdue Fort Wayne 21, Chicago State 13
- Purdue Fort Wayne jumped out to a 6-0 lead
- The Cougars answered with as Janiah Newell and Taylor Norris drove to the basket for a deuce each to close the gap, 6-4
- Purdue Fort Wayne scored a trey and a lay up to increase their lead to 11-4
- Chicago State executed an 8-2 rally with two treys and a lay up from Janiah Newell to tie it up 12-12
- The Mastodons closed the quarter with a 9-1 run to end the quarter leading 21-13
Second Quarter – Purdue Fort Wayne 47, Chicago State 28
- The Mastodons kicked it off with two back-to-back layups to go up 25-13
- A free throw made out of two by Ana Haklicka cut Purdue Fort Wayne’s rally to reach a score of 25-14
- The Mastodons then retaliated with another layup, yet Newell earned a trip to the line and made two for the Cougars
- Chicago State finished the quarter with a pair of Jacia Cunningham free throws and the Mastodons led 47-28 at the half
Third Quarter – Purdue Fort Wayne 72, Chicago State 38
- The Cougars opened up the scoring with a jumper from Newell
- The Mastodons executed a 13-0 run and increased their lead to 61-30
- An Ana Haklicka trey and a lay up from Josie Hill stopped the Mastodons rally
- Purdue Fort Wayne maintained their lead at 72-38 after three quarters
Fourth Quarter – Purdue Fort Wayne 86, Chicago State 52
- The Mastodons began with two made at the charity stripe to increase their lead 74-38
- Purdue Fort Wayne continued their run and increased it to 6-0 after a lay up and yet another trip to the free throw line
- Norris cut the run for the Cougars with a jumper to reach a score of 78-40
- The Mastodons did not let up and continued their dominance through to the end as they comfortably won 86-52
