by The Chicago State women’s basketball team faced off against the Hartford University Hawks and won 76-59.
Freshmen Josie Hill recorded a double-double as she posted up 17 points along with 10 rebounds, while Janiah Newell also put up 17 points, and Tae’Lor Willard adding on 10 of her own.
First Quarter – Chicago State 16, Hartford 14
- Hartford came out hot as they began with a 5-0 run
- Nonetheless, the Cougars bounced back as they outscored the Hawks 6-2 with buckets from Newell and Willard, to trail by one at 6-7
- Chicago State then earned a trip at the charity stripe, in which Cunningham drained both to tie it up at 8-8
- The teams then went on a back-and-forth scoring stretch which resulted in the Cougars leading by two as Myers, Hester, Hill, Willard, and Newell all converted buckets to gift the Cougars the lead
Second Quarter – Chicago State 38, Hartford 34
- Chicago State opened up the scoring as Hill drove in a layup to increase the Cougar lead to 18-14
- Unfortunately, the Hawks scored right back as they hit two free throws to now only trail by two
- These events set a trend for the rest of the quarter as neither team was be able to pull away from the other
- This led to a 38-34 lead for the Cougars as they managed to finish the quarter on a 2-0 run as Newell drained two free throws to head into halftime
Third Quarter – Chicago State 58, Hartford 45
- Chicago State came out hot as Newell drained a three to open up the scoring and lead at 41-34
- The Hawks then hit a deuce, yet Willard came right back down and hit a jumper for the Cougars to retain their 7-point lead at 43-36
- The Cougars managed to outscore the Hawks 15-9 as Hill, Newell, Willard, and Haklicka drained buckets to gain a 58-45 lead heading into the fourth and final quarter
Fourth Quarter – Chicago State 76, Hartford 59
- A 3-minute scoring drought ensued at the start of the fourth until the Cougars finally opened up the scoring with a trey from Myers to increase their lead to 61-45
- Much like in the first two quarters, back-and-forth scoring ensued as the Hawks tried to come back but fell short with the Cougars easily cruising to the win with a final score of 76-59
