LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville women’s basketball, following a week off from competition, returns to action on Sunday when it faces Wake Forest at 2 p.m. in Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Winston-Salem, N.C.
The Jan. 11 contest will be broadcast on WKRD 790 AM in Louisville, with Matt Andrews (play-by-play) and Adrienne Johnson (analyst) on the call. Fans can watch the game on Wake Forest’s athletics website at WakeForestSports.com.
No. 6/7 Louisville (14-1) recorded its sixth-consecutive win on Jan. 4, beating Pittsburgh 63-57 on the road and pushing the Cardinals to 2-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. In the final 10 minutes, Louisville’s defense limited Pittsburgh to just nine points on 3-of-15 shooting, holding the Panthers scoreless in the final 3:06 to complete the comeback victory.
Jude Schimmel led UofL with 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting, scoring nine in the second half behind a pair of 3-pointers. Mariya Moore scored all 10 of her points in the final period, Bria Smith added all nine of her points in the second half, and the Cardinals received a pair of clutch free throws from freshman Arica Carter to give Louisville a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.
On the year, Moore leads Louisville with 13.6 points and a team-best 55 assists. Myisha Hines-Allen ranks second in scoring (12.2) behind a school-best 54.8 percent shooting. Smith (10.7) and Hammond (10.6) are also averaging double figures in points, and Jude Schimmel has a team-high 39 steals.
Wake Forest (9-7, 0-2 ACC) suffered its second-consecutive loss – both games against ACC foes – after dropping a 72-70 decision at Virginia on Jan. 8. The Demon Deacons loss their ACC opener at No. 10 Duke 70-63.
Against Virginia, the Cavaliers converted a pair of free throws with one second remaining. The Demon
Deacons, who finished the game with a 51.7 percent clip from the floor, scored 52 of their points in the paint.
Dearica Hamby had another solid individual performance, leading Wake Forest with 27 points on 12-of-18 shooting. Amber Campbell had 18 points and eight rebounds, and Kelila Atkinson added 12 points and three blocks
Through 16 games, Hamby is leading Wake Forest with 20.7 points per game – second best in the ACC and 23rd nationally – along with 10.1 rebounds per game, which is third best in the league. She is shooting 52.5 percent from the field and 73 percent from the charity stripe. Campbell is the only other player averaging double-digit points (10.7).
Collectively, Wake Forest is knocking down 33.3 percent of its 3-pointers and is averaging 15.3 made free throws per game.
The Demon Deacons are under the direction of third-year coach Jen Hoover, who has a 37-42 record at the helm of the program. Wake Forest, which went 15-16 last season, was picked to finish 11th in the ACC Preseason Media Poll.
