DURANGO, Colo. – February 17, 2017 – Redshirt freshman Kayla Herrera (Chippewa) matched a career high in points with 27 to lead the Fort Lewis College women’s basketball team to a key win, 72-60, over Colorado School of Mines at Whalen Gymnasium Friday night.
FLC improves to 19-6 overall and 14-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. CSM moves to 15-13 overall and 11-8 in league games.
Herrera made 9-of-13 field goals including 5-of-7 three-pointers for a game high 27 points. She added three rebounds, three steals and one assist.
Junior guard Shelby Patterson added 14 points, eight of which came from the charity stripe as she sank 8-of-10.
Kaitlyn Romero hit a three-pointer with 61 seconds left in the first quarter to give FLC a two-point lead they would hold onto for the remainder of the game.
After a two-point lead in the opening quarter, 13-11, FLC outscored the Orediggers 21-12 in the second quarter. The Skyhawks started the second stanza with an 11-2 run.
Fort Lewis scored 20 points off of CSM’s 14 turnovers.
The Skyhawks finished the game making 40.8 percent from the floor (20-of-49) while holding the Orediggers to a 27.5 field goal shooting mark.
FLC will play their final regular season home game on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. against Adams State University.
