Lance Christensen Jr. (Cheyenne River Sioux/Oglala) is tied for fifth place after the opening round of Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – For the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational, the Aggies got off the a red-hot start on the Eisenhower Blue Golf Course. NM State sits in second place following the opening round, shooting an even 288. The Aggies trail just Valparaiso by three shots entering Tuesday’s second round.

Lance Christensen Jr. and Alvaro Morales were among the best in the field on Sunday. Christensen Jr. found success early as he eagled his second hole of the day before finishing the back nine at two-under. Morales saw the majority of his success come on the front nine to close out the round. With four birdies, Morales shot a 34 (-2) on the front of the course to finish the opening round at 71 (-1).

Javier Delgadillo proved to be ever consistent in the opening round, firing an even 72. The El Paso native jumped out to a hot start over the front nine, firing a 34 (-2) with birdies on holes five and nine. Vari Mariscal also rounded out the scoring for NM State with a 75 (+3) on Sunday. Mariscal, a freshman from Deming, N.M., birdied the third hole to get his collegiate career underway.

  • As a team, the Aggies remain just three shots off of Valparaiso for the lead
  • The Aggies will play with Weber State, CSUN, and Gonzaga on Tuesday
  • NM State birdied 13 times in the opening round, bringing their season total to 50.
