SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Four different Toreros recorded double-digit kills, paced by junior middle hitter Lisa Kramer’s 21, to help propel the University of San Diego women’s volleyball team to a thrilling 3-1 win over Gonzaga University Saturday afternoon in a West Coast Conference match at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
With the 25-18, 21-25, 25-23, 25-11 win, the Toreros improve to 13-2 overall, remain in a three-way tie for first place in the WCC at 6-1, and have now defeated the Bulldogs 40 consecutive times. With the loss, the Zags fall to 12-9 overall and 3-5 in the WCC.
Kramer led all players with her 21 kills on 54 swings, while committing six errors to hit for a .278 clip. Jayden Kennedy recorded a new career-high with 16 kills, while hitting for a .480 clip, and she had one dig, while Canace Finley also recorded 16 kills, and had one block and one dig. Kristen Gengenbacherrecorded another double-double with 51 assists and 15 digs, while Hunter Jennings recorded a season-high 24 digs. Lauren Shad (Cheyenne River Sioux) rounded out the double-digit kills crew with 10 of her own
As a team, USD hit for a .296 clip, while Gonzaga recorded a team hitting percentage of .160. USD out-blocked the Bulldogs 8.0-7.0, while the Zags recorded 43 kills to USD’s 68 total kills.
For the Zags, Savannah Blinn led the way with 15 kills, while hitting for a .324 clip, and she had three blocks. Kaylie Loewen was the only other GU player in double digit kills with 10. Lauren Joseph recorded 18 assists, while Morgan Douglass recorded 11 digs.
The Toreros will return to action on Tuesday, as they host cross-town rival San Diego State University in a 6 p.m. non-conference match at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
