SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Behind a 14-kill performance from senior opposite Canace Finley, the University of San Diego women’s’ volleyball team picked up a 3-0 win over cross-town rival San Diego State University Tuesday evening in a non-conference match at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
With the 25-23, 25-21, 25-13 win, the Toreros improve to 14-6 overall, and run their winning streak to five. With the loss, the Aztecs fall to 6-15 overall, and have now lost back-to-back matches.
Finley led all players with her 14 kills on 27 swings, while only committing three errors to hit for a .407 clip. Lisa Kramer was the only other player in double-digit kills, as she had 11 to go along with seven digs and one block. Kristen Gengenbacher recorded a near double-double, as she had 33 assists, eight digs, and added in four blocks. Hunter Jennings led the defense with nine digs, while Lauren Schad (Cheyenne River Sioux) had five blocks to go with her 5 kills.
As a team, USD hit for a .227 clip, while the Aztecs struggled, hitting .090. The Toreros out blocked the Aztecs, 7.0-5.0, and USD recorded 41 kills, to SDSU’s 32 kills.
For the Aztecs, Kaja Sandberg led the way, as she had nine kills, while hitting .471, and had one dig and one block. Devyn Pritchard recorded nine digs, while Baylee Little, who had three blocks, led the blocking effort.
San Diego will return to action on Thursday, as they head up to Los Angeles to take on the Lions of Loyola Marymount in a West Coast Conference match at 7 p.m.
