STILLWATER—Oklahoma State’s women’s basketball team opened Big 12 play on Sunday afternoon with a 62-51 loss against Texas in front of 2,041 fans inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.
For OSU, the contest was its first since Dec. 17 and saw the Cowgirls dip to 5-5 on the season, while the No. 12 Longhorns moved to 10-1.
In the first, OSU raced out to a 15-6 lead before the Longhorns closed the frame to get within one at 16-15.
Texas scored the first three points of the second to move in front and hit OSU with another 7-0 spurt to extend its margin to 30-22. A pair of free throws from Micah Dennis got OSU within two with less than a minute left before Teas would get the final bucket of the half to lead 34-30 at the break.
With an 8-0 run midway through the third, the Longhorns pushed the margin into double figures for the first time on the day at 45-35. The Cowgirls got within five with two minutes to go, but Texas halted the run with a 3-pointer a minute later.
Lauren Fields paced the Cowgirls with a game-high 17 points to go with five rebounds and four steals. She was joined in double figures by Dennis, who added 10 points , five rebounds and four steals of her own. Sophomore Lexy Keys (Cherokee) added 9 points along with 7 rebounds.
