Lopes Finish Fifth at NM State Invitational; Kelcey Tate (Navajo) Places 20th Overall

The Grand Canyon University women’s golf team finished fifth at the NM State Invitational, hosted by New Mexico State at the University Golf Course in Las Cruces, N.M. The Antelopes carded a four-over 292 in today’s round to bring their 56-hole total to 11-over 875.

GCU’s Charlotte Jaengkit finished tied for first alongside Idaho’s Kaitlyn Oster and Boise State’s Samantha Martin at 10-under 206. The trio were four strokes ahead of BYU’s Lea Garner in fourth.

“I am very proud of our team as we had our best finish so far this season,” said head coach Don Powers. To finish fifth among a very strong field is great for the team. “Also, Kelcey played very well throughout this tournament,” added Powers. “I am excited for our future with the help from our freshmen Kennedie, Samantha, and Deanna.”

Kelcey Tate shot a two-over 74 in the final round to bring her three-day total to three-over 219. Tate finished in a tie for 20th place and joined Jaengkit as one of only 16 individuals to collect at least one eagle.

The Lopes finished with the fourth-best mark on Par 4 scoring (+28) and had the sixth-most pars with 169.

The Lopes return to action next Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 13-14) at the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational hosted by Seattle U at the Tacoma Country Club. Fans can follow all of the action during the 2014-15 women’s golf season by visiting www.gculopes.com.
