COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Maryland volleyball senior middle blocker Rainelle Jones (Cree) was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week by the conference on Monday afternoon.
Jones’ weekend started in Friday night’s monumental victory over No.2 Wisconsin, where Jones had three kills with 11 total blocks and set a new career-high with four solo blocks. Two of those solo blocks came back-to-back in a third set where the Terps had eight total rejections.
Against Minnesota on Sunday she added three more kills and two blocks. An Oxon Hill, Maryland, native, Jones had an outstanding weekend with six kills and 13 total blocks.
Jones now leads the team in total blocks with 85 and averages 1.98 blocks per set. A consistent presence throughout her time in College Park, Jones inches closer to a 500 kill – 500 block career as she currently sits at 557 kills and 443 blocks.
Jones was also named Terp of the Week on Monday for the second consecutive week. She’s the first Defensive Player of the Week fo Maryland since Allegra Rivas earned the honor on Nov. 12, 2018.
