Mason Ackley (Ojibwe) post a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds for UW-Superior

ASHLAND, Wis. – All five starters scored double figures as the UW-Superior men’s basketball team notched an 85-64 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference road victory over Northland at Kendrigan Gymnasium on Saturday.

Junior Josef Fahrenholz tallied a game-high-tying 15 points on 6-for-12 shooting, adding seven rebounds, in the Yellowjackets’ second consecutive win. Junior Eli Vogel (Appleton, Wis./Appleton West) also scored 15 – including 10 in the first half – with two assists. Classmate Mason Ackley (Ojibwe) turned in Superior’s second double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 boards.

UWS (5-8, 2-1 UMAC) led nearly the entire game, shooting better than 46 percent (32-for-69) on the day. The ‘Jackets built a 44-25 advantage at halftime with the help of a 7-for-12 showing from 3-point range in the first half.

Fahrenholtz hit consecutive shots to ignite a 9-0 run and open a 12-4 lead with just over three minutes off the clock. Vogel strung together five straight, capping the stretch with a 3-pointer. Junior Xavier Patterson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) then hit a trey to give UWS its first double-digit edge of the game at 20-10. The lead grew to 29-15 on a steal and layup by Ackley with 9:04 remaining in the half. Ackley then stripped Northland’s Ben Smith with 3:13 to play and found T.J. Moberg (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) for a triple in transition to make it a 42-25 score.

Senior Carter Brown (Eau Claire, Wis./Regis Catholic) put Superior ahead by 30 at 65-35 with six minutes gone in the second after a 3-pointer of his own before Fahrenholtz converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 7:05 remaining. That gave UWS its largest lead of the day at 79-46.

Northland (3-11, 2-1) used a 16-2 run to cut the deficit to 18 at 81-63 with 3:10 to play but got no closer.
